Regions and physical features of the deep sea environment relative to depth, notice how temperature, light, and biomass all decrease with increasing depth. Representative species are a mesopelagic (200-1000m) lanternfish, bathypelagic (1000-4000m) ceratioid anglerfish, benthopelagic (just above bottom) rattail and halosaur, and benthic (bottom) snailfish and greeneye. Many mesopelagic species undergo a diurnal vertical migration (DVM) to shallower waters at dusk, returning to deeper water at dawn.
